What Avery Anderson Has Been Doing With Your Vote

Avery Anderson has represented Newton, Sedgwick, and Whitewater in the Kansas Legislature since 2020.

He was elected right out of college, living at home with his parents. He is still in office. Here is what the record shows about how he has spent that time.

The Video

In 2024, Anderson made statewide news when a video surfaced showing him encouraging another legislator to jump on a woman who was passed out in a bed after a night of drinking. The incident happened in July 2023, at a Wichita apartment — while Anderson was a sitting elected official.

A police report confirmed he admitted to his role in what happened. He later changed his story after, in his own words, receiving calls from media inquiring about the incident.

Multiple women came forward in 2024 saying Anderson had abused them.

That other legislator — the one Anderson egged on — was his friend and colleague Rep. Kyler Sweeley of the 102nd District.

The Lawsuit

In 2025, Anderson sued Uber after closing down Lawrence bars and getting into a wreck. Court documents filed in that case — case number DG-2024-CV-000016, available at casesearch.kscourts.gov — include Exhibit E, which contains Anderson's Uber history from when he was first elected through March 2024.

During that period, as an elected official, Anderson used Uber 128 times between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

He didn't sue alone. Sweeley's friend Hunter Larkin filed alongside him — a former Goddard mayor who received a DUI in 2021 while in office, resigned in 2022 following news of unethical campaign donations from city contractors, and led what residents described as a government coup in 2023 to get reinstated before eventually leaving office under public pressure.

The Money

Over the three most recent years of available campaign finance data, 85% of Anderson's donations came from lobbyists and PACs. Five percent came from within his own legislative district. The data is publicly available at kpdc.kansas.gov.

In 2025, lobbyists spent more money wining and dining Avery Anderson than any other member of the Kansas Legislature — all 165 of them. The total was $7,393.

His friend Kyler Sweeley wasn't far behind. Sweeley ranked fourth among all Kansas legislators in lobbyist expenditures that same year.

Where He Lives

The Kansas Constitution is straightforward on this point. Article 2, Section 4 requires that a legislator reside in their district. The video incident happened at a Wichita apartment in July 2023. Anderson's district is Newton, Sedgwick, and Whitewater.
